    As a retired BMW Master Technician I told my sons, to be the best technician in the shop, they need to learn electrical properties, principles and systems, and you will be the most sought after technician in the shop, because I found during my tenure in a shop, that most technicians fall short on knowing the fundamentals on how electrical systems work, and how electronics works, so my sons have both become very very good at electrical sytstems, and both of them have become top employees in the business and their companies and have been able to basically name their price for their hourly pay, due to their high demand and knowledge as a technician. 😎👍

    I still have my little butane torch /soldering iron from radio shack. It's the one that came with the flint and wheel striker like on big lighters. I don't know how many decades ago I bought it but it still works well. Not much for accessory tips, but I don't need much... I might have to look into these for my car.

    I'd say each has it's usefulness at a certain point. I wouldn't use a gas powered one near stuff that can get affected by the exhaust port, or an open flame. Battery powered ones have evolved quite a bit. I have a cheap Chinese one that uses a power bank (or any USB port) as a power source and it works as well as my old gas powered soldiering pen. Not saying it's great, but does the basic stuff, without melting stuff around, in a confined space, like under a dash.

    Butane irons have their place, but I use the TS101 and power it from my NOCO GBX45 booster pack, it heats to 400 degreesC in under 10 seconds and is about 1/3 of the size of the featured one, so very easy to get into tight spots and for fine detail work. It is completely portable, so I can use it when I'm out and about. I wouldn't change it for anything else.

    Unfortunately, I have one of these and find it to be quite disappointing. In the field, I am currently using the Aldi Rechargeable one. Having extensive experience in using certified crimp tools and terminals in component maintenance avionics, crimping is my first choice. However, if soldering is required then the Portasol in my opinion is a high-quality tool and would be my only choice for a gas soldering tool. Another great video.

    • @MechanicMindset
      @MechanicMindset День тому

      Ah yes, crimps are the favoured method for manufacturers approved repairs. I wonder how they compare to aviation standards 🤔

    • @colinreid7305
      @colinreid7305 День тому

      @@MechanicMindset If using crimp tools from AMP, DCM.TE Daniels or crimpers approved by the vehicle manufacture and the correct terminals for the crimper, then the quality of the crimp should be like aircraft crimps. The real issue is the use of cheap poor-quality tooling and terminals combined with lack of training. I suspect rules regarding electric vehicle repairs will result in the use of aircraft wiring standards of repairs. Solder sleeves are used on some aircraft wiring repairs resulting in a sealed connection and only requiring a heat gun, yet another use for your Portasol

    I used to use a butane soldering iron but got tired of the indirect flame melting other parts of the car, especially when working up under the dash (like you showed in part of your video). I now use a soldering station that uses a Milwaukee M18 battery and I get many hours off of one charge, and no indirect flame to melt plastic parts and wiring under the dash anymore. I do like your channel, but using your BMW as the example in this case isn't helpful. It would have been a good idea if Emanual would have allowed you more access so you could have searched for different vehicles. It's clearly showing the BMW ISTA program so other manufacturers information isn't going to be shown in the same way, so this video is a bit misleading. People going to search and pay for their information who don't know that ISTA is BMW specific might be a little suprised when their info is in front of them and it looks nothing like what is in your vid. Having worked in the industry myse;f, those in the know will understand that all manufacturers diagrams etc are all different and not shown in the same way. I think it will be a good idea to do a vid or series of videos on different manufacturers info so people watching your channel can see what is out there.

      It would definitely be good to see the quality and method of material for other manufacturers. It seems there are varying levels of quality for eManual. I think I mentioned that they said it would be different depending on the vehicle. They did make that clear to me as I did ask 👍

    Thanks so much for the online manuals. awesome source for information. I figured they existed for diy'ers and these are 1 time purchase and download per vehicle at emanualonline. Other places like all data are $25 per vehicle for 30 days access which can add up if you have an older vehicle.

    How did you get the automotive version of pico6 to work with this scope?

      I’m not using the Automotive version 👍 There was a little trick to make it work but it’s not possible anymore. We never used automotive in any of our videos with 2204A 👍

      @@MechanicMindset I just seen the automotive tab on the screen of your video and realized my version of pico 6 does not have it
